“Found them on That Discogs”

Two new additions waiting for me when I arrived home from work. Bonus pick-me-ups at the end of a difficult week.

I’ve been after these for a while and decided to snap them up when I saw them on Discogs for a couple of quid (including postage, I got them both for little over £6).

Cruzados – Cruzados

Tito Larriva’s outfit before Tito & Tarantula. I’ve read some interesting stuff about these guys, so I’m looking forward to dropping the needle on this one in particular.

The band also includes Tito & Tarantula’s guitarist Steven Hufsteter and Chalo Quintana, who would then go on to be a Ju Ju Hound).

Van Halen – Fair Warning

My buddy JH’s favourite Van Halen album (he wrote a great piece on it a while back) and Mike Ladano had also recommended that I make it a priority purchase (it scores a 5 over at Mike’s site). So, it might have taken a while, but that’s it in the collection now.

So, aye, more new records. Are you familiar with these? Thoughts?

When I reviewed “Fair Warning,” I put it just below their first two albums. It’s a great forgotten VH album.

It received two spins today… the kiddo liked it too (even got up from the couch to turn the volume up on the stereo). The debut will always be my favourite, though… given it was my first.

Oh dude. I’m so happy for you! This truly is a very important album! To me personally as well, it was one of my first CDs. Probably within the first dozen. I chose it on CD because I’d never seen it on tape.

    Glad you enjoyed!

It’s a belter, Mike. I had it cranked earlier. JJ seemed to enjoy it a whole lot, too.

  3. Love this one. I have it on vinyl and listened to it about a week or two ago.

I assumed that, John… but I was secretly hoping you liked the Cruzados 😃

Ed’s guitar tone on Fair Warning is nasty/mean/dirty…so good so aggressive ..so pissed off and so brilliant! Plus aren’t those lyrics from One Foot Out The Door funny as heck!??
    Great score Fella!

Spot on, Deke… it’s more urgent than the other Van Halen albums I’ve gotten familiar with over the last wee while. There’s a real rasp to it… and Dave sounds brilliant. Some great performances on there.

  5. Fair Warning is a fave round these parts too. Great cover to have on vinyl too.

Yeah, the cover’s a goody. Though I think they should have used the images from the inner sleeve, cause they’re great (the graffiti and the hair!).

Both are welcome additions to the collections. If you have any interest in VH, I’d recommend picking Fair Warning up if you ever see it. Cruzados is also worth investigating, though there are moments that didn’t quite grab me… but that was only one listen, so I may well decide that it’s brilliant after I get to know it.

And you can be sure they help lift me out of the quagmire.

I’m pleased to report that both are winners, Bruce. Really picked me up.

I hope to cover one or both in a bit of detail in 2021.

Never heard either. I didn’t realise Van Halen are still about. I thought they’d folded after that embittered reunion back in 2004/05?

Yeah, they released a pretty good album a few years back, though I’m not sure what their current status is!

I dare say they’re all off Tarantism! That album’s just about perfect… anyhoo, here goes:

Jupiter, Smiling Karen, After Dark, Back To Mexico, Strange Face.

They’re my current favourites, at least.

There’s loads of great stuff there. Tarantism is their most consistent album and is really just about perfect, in my opinion.

My 3 year old nephew is really into guitar-heavy stuff. I mean, he likes to table dance to Justin Timberlake just fine, but when he’s strutting his stuff, he needs some serious riffs. His favourite is “DCDCD” of course and he has all the moves. But we played this a while back and it inspired a real (air) guitar solo out of him.

Sounds similar to how young JJ here likes his music… serious riffs with a side order of boogie! (ZZ Top being a favourite).

I get frustrated with VH, I want to like them but I just can’t – too much dicking around and too many cover versions.
